From June to October, watch the wildebeest and zebra traverse the northern Serengeti, crossing the famous Mara River and its crocodile-infested waters. From December into March, visit our southern Serengeti location where the wildebeest gives birth while lions, cheetah, and leopards prey on the old and the weak. Offering an upgraded migratory camp experience, the unique design of each guest tent allows for stargazing without leaving the comfort of your tent.

ACCOMMODATION & AMENITIES

Olakira Migration Camp offers nine tents when settled in the southern region, one of which has two bedrooms for families. Meanwhile, the northern Serengeti setting has ten tents and two family units. When night falls, our unique mesh-covered stargazing tent design, complete with wooden decking, provides the perfect opportunity to sleep under beautiful skies. All tents have en suite bathrooms with solar-heated hot-water showers.

Olakira Migration Camp moves twice yearly, positioning itself in key locations to witness the best of the Great Migration.

From June to October, the camp is in the Bolongonja area in northern Serengeti, where our guests can witness the exhilarating spectacle of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest following their instincts as they attempt to cross the Mara River. From December to March, the camp is situated in Ndutu, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here, the wildebeest gives birth to the next generation, with up to a thousand calves being born each day. Predators and scavengers enjoy the easy pickings, creating action-filled days and a dream environment for photographers.

In June, Olakira reopens in its northern location after the rainy season, an opportune time to visit before the July peak season starts. The migratory herds begin to mass on the northern plains, before river-crossings begin, usually in early July. Days are warm and dry, the best conditions for game viewing. There’s plenty of action as herds continue to cross back and forth throughout these.

October - January

Short rains start at the end of October, and the wildebeest begin to make their way southwards with the last river crossings of the season. The camp closes in November and reopens in the southern Serengeti location in December. Down south, enjoy the flourishing greenery, migratory birds, and pregnant grazing wildebeest on the southern plains. Calving usually begins in January, attracting all predators and scavengers into the area and creating phenomenal game-viewing experiences. January is warm and sunny, with the occasional short shower.

February - May

The calving season continues through February, with warm weather and excellent photography conditions. Considered peak season in the south, this is usually the best month for viewing the action the southern Serengeti delivers. By mid-March, visitor numbers have decreased and there are signs of the approaching rains. The herds begin to fracture as some wildebeest start moving north and west. Olakira Camp closes in April and May.
