Travel update: Mandatory inbound travel insurance for Tanzania

Planning a trip to Tanzania? Here’s an important travel update for international visitors.

From 1 October 2026, foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania by air, land, or sea will be required to obtain Tanzania’s designated inbound travel insurance. The policy is part of the country’s updated insurance requirements under the Finance Act 2025.

 What you need to know

Cost: US$44 per visitor

Coverage: Up to 92 days

Entry: Applicable to eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania

The insurance is designed to provide assistance for travel-related emergencies, including:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Emergency repatriation
  • Baggage loss or theft
  • Other covered travel emergencies

The government’s 2026 budget documentation confirms the US$44 premium, 92-day limit, and exemptions for EAC and SADC citizens.

Mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar?

Your first point of entry matters.

Visitors entering Mainland Tanzania are covered through the designated Mainland system, while travelers whose first entry is through Zanzibar follow Zanzibar’s separate inbound insurance arrangements.

If your journey includes both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, we recommend checking the requirements based on your first point of entry before travelling.
